Ultralight Startups and Future Energy Case Study

As a lead-up to this years ARPA-E energy conference, Future Energy partnered with
Future EnergyUltralight Startups to give new ideas in the energy space the chance to compete for a spot in the Future Energy Pitching Competition on February 25. Eight groups will pitch at the event, and two of those spots will be held by the groups that received the most votes on the crowdvoting platform that Future Energy and Ultralight created with Launcht. Another 6 companies will be chosen by the Selection Committee based on their fit with Future Energy’s mission to find radical solutions to tomorrow’s energy challenges. They will all present to a panel of top venture capital investors, who will provide feedback and advice to the start-ups.

Future Energy is a community built around entrepreneurs, researchers, and investors who work to create radical solutions for the world’s energy problems. Ultralight Startups works with very early stage for-profit startups before they have investors to help them create a strong network through pitch contests and events. They partnered to attract revolutionary, game-changing projects, and particularly those projects from pre-revenue and early-stage companies, in order to give the companies a chance to garner attention and build their networks through crowdvoting. Campaigns had to go through one application round in order to be approved to be on the platform. Future Energy selected 72 that met their criteria to compete on the site. The competition began on January 14 and ended on February 8, lasting 25 days in total.

 

The project proposals ranged from wireless charging for electric vehicles (1781 votes); to wast water treatments for the oil and gas industry (2033); drilled hydrothermal energy (567); to converting thermal energy to mechanical energy to create electricity (1549); an affordable, lightweight, and mobile wind energy solution (525); to and safer, cleaner, and cheaper atomic energy solutions (518). The competition had 10x more votes than they were expecting at the outset and brought the site over 50,000 page views in 25 days.

The top two campaigns–HEVO Power: Wireless Charging for Electric Vehicles and BDL Water Technologies–have an automatic bid to the final pitch competition where they will meet top venture capitalists in the field. Ultralight and Future Energy will be running their next competitions through the Launcht platform in the near future.
